A lovely lady asked me to hand carve a ring for her. After discussing the project and having a look at various material she selected Turquoise for her special ring. I kept a visual diary of all the various steps taken to create this unique ring.

Tips on how to buy the perfect present

With Mother’s day in a couple of weeks I thought it would be a good time to list all those tips I have worked out through the years at the market helping people choose a present for someone special.

The best way to start is by looking at what the person wears on a regular basis because they obviously like that style!

Colour

The person wears predominantly one colour like black, white, grey, blue

→ go for a simple design in a contrasting or complementary colour

Style guide 1
Short, medium & long necklaces with matching or complementary earrings.
While the black & white colours and designs are classics the gemstones and their shapes gives these necklaces a contemporary look that will easily blend in with your existing jewellery pieces.

The person wears a lot of different colours

→ you can go for a wilder look and choose from a broader colour range

Brightly coloured pieces made with unusual material. Bolder designs.

Accessories & Shapes

The person tends to wear one type of accessory (earrings, necklace, rings, bracelets…) in one main shape or variation on the same theme

→ stick to that accessory, shape and / or theme

The person wears sets of matching accessories

→ get a set or add to one, for example a bracelet added to a set of earrings and pendant.

Size

Simple really if they wear big things or smaller things stay within that size range.

This is a simple check list to keep in mind when you start looking for that elusive perfect present. Happy shopping!

Manu Scriptum Collection

This series of jewellery pieces have been developed in response to my Honours research at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney where I looked into the aesthetic and use of writing in craft practice, particularly in a European context.

Communication is a very important part of our modern world and writing (in its electronic form) is one of the prominent means of keeping in touch with friends and relatives. Handwriting shows personal characteristics and requires a little more effort and / or thought before it is sent. It is not an instant way of communicating but rather more personal. Using handwritten letters to be photo-etched onto the metal surface became my area of focus to reflect the close connection between the writer and the addressee. By wearing an extract of a personal hand written letter the addressee shows the importance of the message and beyond that the connection between two particular people. The piece becomes a constant reminder of that connection and bond.
